Hull vane is a patented fixed foil technology located below the stern of a ship, which is used for fuel saving and improved seakeeping. Hull Vane influences the stern wave pattern and creates hydrodynamic lift. This results in a reduction in of the ship’s resistance.
Performance of the Hull Vane depends on the ship’s length, speed and hull shape in the aft sections. Reduction in resistance ranges from 5 to 15% for suitable ships can be obtained by using hull vane. In specific cases, savings up to 20% are possible. Past studies showed that the hull vane can reduces resistance, if applied properly. However, little studies have been done to determine its shape and location to achieve favorable results.
This study focuses on that and effects of applying hull vane to a naval patrol vessel are studied. Several positioning of the hull vane have been studied at various speeds focusing on total bare hull, residuary and wave resistance coefficients and heaving and pitching motions.
A reduction in wave resistance of 1.569% to 2.736% at 30knots was achieved and reduction of 23.9% and 14.9% was achieved respectively in heaving and pitching motions.
